HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO HAVE MY MANUSCRIPT FORMATTED?
This depends on how many people are ahead of you, but it can usually be done within two to three days.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET MY BOOK BACK IF I SUBMIT IT TO THE “IDEAL READER?”
This, too, depends on how many people are ahead of you, along with your book length. It can usually be read and returned to you in less than two weeks.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET MY PROOFREAD/CRITIQUE?
Your proofread/critique depends on several factors. First, how many manuscripts are ahead of yours. Manuscripts are proofread/critiqued in the order in which they arrive. Second, it depends on the length of the manuscript. The higher the word count the longer it takes to critique. And finally, it depends on how rough your manuscript is. Frequent typos and failing to use spell check will obviously slow down critique time. Feel free to e-mail me with details about your book (genre, length, etc.) at firstname.lastname@example.org to get an estimate of how long it will be before I can begin work on your manuscript.
IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULDN’T EXPECT?
– I am not a book doctor and will not fix or rewrite your book. Your story, voice and style are unique to you and must remain yours. All I will do is point out potential problems and mistakes, and make suggestions that you are free to use or disregard.
– I have no control over what people decide to buy, and therefore I do not make any promises concerning increased book sales. I am only saying that by having your book professionally proofread and critiqued, and presenting a polished, typo-free book, you are greatly increasing the odds of your hard work being purchased.
CAN YOU USE MICROSOFT WORD TO CRITIQUE MY MANUSCRIPT OR DO I NEED TO SEND A PRINTED COPY?
I can make all corrections and suggestions on Microsoft Word.
HOW SHOULD MY MANUSCRIPT BE FORMATTED?
All manuscripts should be in Word doc and set up using first line indent (found at the top of your Word document under the “paragraph” heading. Lines should be double spaced (can be set at 1.5 only if you are sending it to be formatted for publishing on Smashwords and/or Amazon) with Times New Roman 12-point font for the body of the text and 14-point for the chapter heading. If your paragraphs are indented, there should be no extra space between paragraphs. Margins should be set at one inch all around.
If you prefer block style paragraphs, be sure not to indent. Leave one (double) space between the paragraphs. If you are sending your manuscript as a Word doc file and want it critiqued this way, there is no need to put your name, the book title, or a page number on every page. The corrections/ suggestions will increase the number of pages and reek havoc with the page number placement, and if you intend to submit your manuscript as an e-Book you won’t be including page numbers anyway.
CAN I SENT YOU MY UNFINISHED MANUSCRIPT?
It is a waste of time and money to critique unfinished manuscripts. The entire novel must to be read in order to judge the plot, story development and character growth, along with the need to judge a successful story climax and to make sure all the loose ends are tied up. If it does become necessary to have an unfinished manuscript read because you have run into problems with your story and need suggestions to keep it going, submit it to the “Ideal Reader” section.
CAN YOU SEND ME EACH CHAPTER AS YOU FINISH CRITIQUING IT?
No. There are too many times when something shows up in a later chapter that requires a return to a previous chapter that has already been critiqued, resulting in additional changes or notes that need to be added.
DO YOU CRITIQUE NONFICTION?
Yes, but I am selective about the nonfiction manuscripts I accept for critique, depending on the subject and/or how technical it is. Send me an e-mail at email@example.com describing your book. Tell me what type of book it is (biography, memoir, family history, how-to, etc.) along with a short description of your work. After reading this I will let you know if I can do it or if you would be better off choosing someone with more knowledge of this subject.
